The Cavs, in a press release, have confirmed that Love had surgery today Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. It was performed by Dr. Martin O’Malley, the same doctor who performed Kevin Durant’s surgery four years ago. They say his status will be updated six weeks.
This is a blow for the Cavs. Just a few days ago, Love said he didn’t know if he was going to have surgery yet, so further evaluation must have deemed it necessary. Six weeks from today means Love, at the earliest, would be resuming activities on or around Dec. 14.
With Love out, Cleveland — if it hasn’t already — has to know that this season is about developing young talent and not trying to win. It’s a topic that already got a coach fired and there are a number of veterans in the locker room who want to try and win. But if the team’s best player is missing six weeks, what’s the point? It is also worth wondering if the Cavs will bring Love back right when he’s ready or take his time getting him back.
In four games this year, Love averaged 19 points and 13.5 rebounds per game.
