Hyeon Chung downs Lopez at Rogers Cup

The 21-year old from Suwon took advantage of some slack play from Lopez, 35, who racked up eight double faults, to win in three sets 6-1, 4-6, 7-6(3).

The 56th ranked Chung will now face David Goffin in the second round after the Belgian battled past Japan’s Yuichi Sugita in another three setter 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.

Another youngster to make the second round was Croatia’s Borna Coric, who breezed past lucky loser Mikhail Youzhny 6-2, 6-4 to set up a Wednesday meeting with number one seed Rafael Nadal.

Home player Denis Shapovalov earned just his second win on the ATP Tour this year when he upset 64th-ranked Rogerio Dutra Silva of Brazil in a two hour and 26 minute epic struggle.

The 18-year old wildcard, ranked 143rd in the world, survived four match points in the second set tiebreak before eventually pulling through 10-8 on a double fault from his opponent. He then claimed the final set to earn a 4-6, 7-6(8), 6-4 win.

Shapovalov will face Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro in the next round.

Other winners on Tuesday included Pablo Carreno Busta, Sam Querrey, Paolo Lorenzi and Ernesto Escobedo.

Wimbledon champion Roger Federer gets his tournament underway later on Wednesday with a match against Canadian wildcard Peter Polansky.
