Not even Steph Curry can rival the hot streak Damian Lillard’s riding
Since the All-Star break, Damian Lillard—who, infamously, was left off the Western Conference’s squad—is the hottest basketball player on the planet, performing in a zone even Steph Curry can’t touch (maybe).
The Portland Trail Blazers point guard is averaging a career-high 25.1 points per game on the year, but since February 8th (the last five games) he’s up to 35.8 points on 49.5 percent shooting. Lillard is torching defenses from behind the three-point line, too, sinking 43.6 percent on 11 attempts per game—glitchy stats that only Curry can match.
None of those shots counted, but who cares? Lillard is not of this Earth right now. Everything he tosses up goes through the rim. Everything. And the best part of it all? The Blazers are winning! They spanked Curry’s Golden State Warriors by 32 points last Friday (not a misprint) and have won 11 of their last 12 games.
If the season ended today, Portland would face the San Antonio Spurs in the first round of the playoffs. Thankfully, it doesn’t. They still have plenty of time to move up in the standings and give themselves an actual shot at beating somebody.
They’re only 3.0 games back of the depleted Memphis Grizzlies—a team that could fall out of the playoff bracket all together—and if Lillard keeps playing the way he is, a first-round matchup against the Los Angeles Clippers would be on the horizon.
But that’s getting a little too far ahead of ourselves. For now, let’s just enjoy watching Lillard scorch the ground he walks on. At this moment, nobody is more dangerous.
