Giants sign QB Keith Wenning to practice squad
EAST RUTHERFORD — The Giants signed quarterback Keith Wenning, a 2014 sixth-round pick, as part of a wave of practice squad transactions on Tuesday.
The team also signed running back Jacob Huesman and safety Ryan Murphy.
Running back Russell Hansbrough was signed off the Giants’ practice squad Tuesday to the Buccaneers’ active roster, and safety Christian Bryant will be signing to the active roster of an unspecified team.
Wenning was drafted by the Ravens out of Ball State. The Coldwater, Ohio., native has never taken a regular season snap. He spent the 2014 season on the Ravens’ practice squad after being cut at the end of training camp.
Wenning spent the 2015 season on the Bengals’ practice squad and active roster after playing for Cincinnati in the preseason. He’s been out of the league since Cincinnati cut him in September prior to the start of the regular season.
The Giants only have one quarterback under contract for the 2017 season – Eli Manning.
Backups Josh Johnson and Ryan Nassib, who was placed on injured reserve last week with a bad elbow, will both be unrestricted free agents. So Wenning is likely working for a futures contract for the rest of the season, however longer it lasts.
Huesman is a converted quarterback from Tennessee-Chattanooga. He most recently was with the CFL’s Saskatchewan Roughriders. Murphy, an Oregon State product, was a seventh-round pick by the Seahawks in 2015 and has spent time on the Broncos’ practice squad the last two seasons after being the Seahawks in the 2015 preseason.
